Note to riders: beware the thorns in the grass on the outside of the track - they will flatten tires. Also, there are no bathroom facilities or water fountains.
Specifications
The track is approximately 1/5 mile long, and the banked turns are at a 28 degree angle.
History
This velodrome was built in 1961-62 after the Forest Park Velodrome was destroyed due to the expansion of Highway 40. It was designed by Olympic cyclist and Schwinn bicycle designer Frank Burlando, and paid for by the St. Louis Cycling Club on land donated by the City of St. Louis. Shortly after it was built, a city sewer line collapsed, which demolished one of the banked turns. The city repaired the damage, but the effect is still felt as bumps.
National championship racing was held here in 1962. Resurfacing was done in 1984, and in 2005 another effort to fill cracks and maintain painted lines was started.
