Ax-3 Domaines is a common inclusion in the Tour de France, and a popular destination for recreational cyclists. It is rated a Category 1, the classification for the second highest difficulty climb. Though a relatively shorter climb, the higher average slope and the fact that the climb is usually placed as a summit finish in the Tour de France account for this difficulty rating. The direct route approaches from the north, departing from Ax-les-Thermes on road D82. The total climb is 7.9 km, an elevation gain of 656 m (2,152 ft), with an average gradient of 8.3%.
The climb can be done in sequence after climbing Port of Pailhères to the east or Col du Chioula to the north of Ax-les-Thermes.
