The hundred kilometers of canals create roughly 90 distinct islands, and a network of over 1,500 bridges. Many tour companies provide boat tours to showcase the best canals and bridges, as well as picturesque houses and historic buildings lining the canals.
Holland.com, the official tourism website of the Netherlands, recommends some "Must See" canal sights:
1. The Golden Bend: the canal from ‘Leidsestraat’ to ‘Vijzelstraat’ has the most beautiful and magnificent stretch of canal houses of Amsterdam.
2. One view, fifteen bridges: the bridge on the corner of ‘Reguliersgracht’ and ‘Herengracht’ has a unique view over fifteen bridges. Make sure you stand on the side of the street with the odd numbers.
3. Magere Brug: the ‘Magere Brug’ (Skinny Bridge) is one of the most picturesque bridges of Amsterdam. At night the bridge is romantically illuminated.
